The life of James J. Braddock, a professional boxer in the 1920’s and 30’s really impressed me. His fairy tale rise from the bottom to the top of the boxing profession earned him the nickname of the ‘Cinderella Man’. I learned about him when I saw the movie ‘Cinderella Man’ acted out by Russell Crowe.

The story, in a nutshell, is about James who fights for the light heavyweight title in 1929 and loses the fight. A few months later when the stock market crashes it brings a great depression that adversely affects James and his family; the financial crisis pushes the family into desperate times. James though perseveres through the immense hardship and eventually becomes the heavyweight champion of the world in the year 1935.

Two lessons that I draw from the life of James Braddock is his determination to stay strong and keep pressing on even in the harshest situations in life and his love and admiration for his family. I believe these distinctive qualities of James influenced me to a great extent and changed my outlook towards life.

Dealing With Difficult Situations In Life
Life is not the same all the time, it has a twist, turns, ups and downs and that is what makes it adventurous and worth-living. At the beginning of the storm, we might struggle to stay calm but as you stay the course, hang on and overcome each challenge, you will only come out stronger and better than before.

Success never comes to people who never fail; it comes to people who never quit. So the number one and the most important mantra to deal with a difficult situation is to never quit, no matter what till you see a breakthrough.

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. – Harriet Beecher Stowe

The second most important thing is to watch your words. Confess and speak positive words, train yourself to think and speak positive words all the time. Your words are a weapon that can either build you or destroy you.

“Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts.” – Patrick Rothfuss

Family Is Important
Unusual for boxers both then and now, James Braddock was a family man with 3 kids. When he met Mae his wife, he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he was a devoted father to his children and a loving husband to his wife. It was his love for his family that led him to succeed.

It is quite disturbing these days to see people de-value the importance of family in the process of becoming successful. Love is a commitment and not just a feeling. When you decide to get married you are committing yourself to love, cherish, respect, honor and stay faithful to your partner for the rest of your life not matter what challenges come your way. So it is when you have children that you take up the responsibility to bring them up in godly ways, staying together, supporting each other, drawing strength from each other.

“Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights and our comfort when we occasionally falter” – Brad Henry

“The only people who truly know your story, are the ones who help you write it”

In conclusion, I strongly recommend that you watch the movie ‘Cinderella Man’ and draw your own lessons from the amazing life of James Braddock.
