Have you heard the Zambian proverb that says “When you run alone you run FAST but when you run together you run FAR”?
Our society is changing; everyone wants their own space and privacy to the extent that togetherness is looked upon as a weird thing. I come across a lot of young people nowadays who think like that.
“Yeah, I like being on my own. I do. I tend to be a loner, so I’m okay. I’m not okay when I have to be around everyone all the time.” – Keri Russell
“I love to be alone. I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.” – Henry David Thoreau
The world today is thinking just like Keri Russell and Henry Thoreau. They don’t like to have people around them.
Recently I heard a story of a man who died in his apartment and for 2 years nobody even found his body. It was sad to know that a precious soul was not missed by a single person. He lived as a loner and died as a loner.
Life is a battle and we need each other so we can go as far as possible to reach our goals and fulfill our purpose and that is what the Zambian proverb teaches us.
Let me suggest 4 reasons why we need each other in life, if you give a good thought to it and put it into practice they will enrich your life and you will be fruitful all the time.
We need others to WALK with us
“Everybody has a longing for belonging” – Rick Warren
Life is a journey and God doesn’t want us to walk alone by ourself; that is not what he intended. He always provides a companion to walk along with us, in the form of parents, siblings, friends and our life partner. It is our choice whether we take it or leave it.
There is no danger of anything when you have a companion. Our companion provides safety. Together you can face any challenge and take safety in each other’s companionship.
The support of your companion enables you to explore new challenges and sore high in life. They stand by you and help you walk well.
“Two people are better than one, because they get more done by working together”
We need others to WATCH for us
As it is in every adventure trip there is always some risk to life. Similarly our life’s journey is also full of danger and pitfalls that can destroy our life and future.
The danger of getting into drugs, alcoholism, wrong company of friends, being deceived by corrupt people, accidents etc. All these and many more like these can be a deadly snare that can ruin our life completely.
“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” – The Bible
Therefore we always need a companion who watches our back, who signals us when there is a danger. In the company of others you are in a safer spot because they can look after you.
“If one person falls, another can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.” – The Bible
We need others to WAIT & WEEP for us
Just as death is the reality of life; we cannot run away from it, especially when it happens to our loved ones. It is the most heartbreaking & hurting experience of all.
We will all have to face it sometime or the other and it is during these moments in life we need someone who will wait & weep with us, sharing our grief and easing our pain.
Similarly there could be more incidents that could devastate us like losing a job, heartbreaks, accidents, sickness and so on. How wonderful it would be to have a companion who could stand by us and be a source of comfort, who could rejoice with us in our good times and grieve with us in our times of despair.
“Be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep” – The Bible
“Encourage each other and strengthen one another.” – The Bible
We need others to WITNESS with us
“Life is what you celebrate. All of it. Even its end.”
– Joanne Harris
Truly as life is a celebration we also need our loved ones to witness, appreciate and celebrate along. It adds to the joy.
Hope you guys are encouraged and determined to make your life more enthusiastic and exciting in the company of others, to WALK, WATCH, WAIT, WEEP & WITNESS this wonderful journey called Life.
