When I was a kid, I remember on one of my visits to Kerala my grandmother made me a ball out of a palm leaf. I loved it so much that I carried it with me all the while, even back to Mumbai. It was so unique and special to me that I flaunted it where ever I went.
One of those days an American missionary family came to visit us at home. While they were talking to my mom they saw me playing with this palm leaf ball and being so fascinated with it, they offered to pay my mom money to take it with them. They said they wanted to show it to their children. With a heavy heart I gave it away but at the same time I also felt very proud; proud because they treated that simple thing made by my grandmother with so much value. For many days I kept thinking about it.
After many years today while I was with my family at a resort surrounded by palm trees, I attempted to make that ball again (see the picture above), and after several attempts I finally succeeded! All those memories from the past came alive.
It is often the simple things in life that leave a lasting memory which we cherish forever.
Son, in this demanding and hectic life, always remember to treasure the small and simple joys that create unforgettable memories.
