Son, “Money can’t buy life” were the final words of the famous Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley to his son Ziggy Marley.
Bob Marley (Birth name – Nesta Robert Marley) was born on a farm of his maternal grandfather in Jamaica & sadly lost his father when he was 10 years old. When he was a kid, one of Bob’s regular chores was to hike five miles through rugged country to fetch firewood.
Bob achieved International fame through a series of Reggae albums, started out in 1963 with the group the Wailers, he was known as a distinctive song writer and had a unique vocal style that resonated with the audiences all over the world even to this day.
Bob died of cancer (brain, liver, stomach, lungs) on May 11, 1981. He was 36 years old. In one day, 40,000 people past by his coffin as his body lay in state in Jamaica’s National Arena. And that’s just the number of people who got inside.
“Money can’t buy Life”
I wondered why he chooses the statement “Money can’t buy life” as his last words to his son. I believe it all boils down to what Bob thought about Life itself.
Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you’re living? – Bob Marley
The life that he was referring to in this quote is a life within us, the innermost joys and sense of rewards we enjoy.
I completely agree with him on this because I too believe that we need to define Life in the right perspective; having a good house, a car, the best mobile, or the best outfits is not how you define life as most of people do especially youngsters.
There’s nothing wrong with having lots of money, what matters is where you set your heart. It’s the attitude that counts.
I don’t know how to live good. I only know how to suffer. – Bob Marley
Even though Bob had all the wealth in the world, he never knew how to live a good & enjoyable life. Son, let that not be the state your life. It is not the amount of wealth you gather that defines your life, it’s the innermost, heartfelt moments that will define your life and make it special.
